Seamless Gutters in San Antonio: What the Price Per Foot Buys

Get three seamless gutter quotes on the same house in Castle Hills and you'll get something like $1,600, $2,100 and $2,400. Same house, same footage, all "seamless aluminum." The difference isn't margin. It's what's in the aluminum, what's holding it up, and what's been left off. Here is the price per foot taken apart.

The base: $9–$14 per foot in San Antonio

That range covers a 5-inch or 6-inch seamless aluminum gutter, formed on site, with corners, end caps, downspouts, hangers, sealant, labor and haul-away of the old system. Around $9 buys the thin version of everything. Around $14 buys the heavy version. The six line items

Gauge: .027 vs .032

Aluminum gutter coil comes in two common thicknesses. The .027 is what most quotes assume because it's cheaper and lighter. The .032 is about 20% thicker, costs maybe $0.75–$1.25 more per foot, and matters here for one reason: hail. A .027 gutter takes a dent from a one-inch stone; a .032 gutter usually shrugs it off. It also holds pitch better on long runs and doesn't oil-can in the afternoon sun. Ask which gauge the quote is for. If the estimator doesn't know, that's an answer.

Hangers: spikes vs hidden, and spacing

The old spike-and-ferrule hanger is a long nail driven through the gutter into the fascia. It's fast and it's what's on most 1980s–2000s houses in San Antonio, and it's why those gutters sag: the spike works loose from the dried-out board within a decade. A hidden hanger is a bracket clipped inside the gutter and screwed into the rafter tail. Spacing matters too — every 24 inches is standard, every 18 on runs that carry a big roof. Hidden hangers at 24 inches add roughly $1 a foot over spikes at 36 inches. It's the best dollar in the quote.

Downspouts: 2x3 vs 3x4

A 2x3 downspout is the default; a 3x4 carries nearly double the water and costs about $40 more per downspout including the bigger outlet. On a house with five downspouts that's $200, and it's the difference between a gutter that overflows in a May storm and one that doesn't. Count the downspouts on the quote as well as the size: one per 30–35 feet of run. A quote with four downspouts on 200 feet of gutter has already decided the back run will overflow.

Corners and miters

Every inside and outside corner is a mitered joint, either a factory corner piece or a hand-cut miter, sealed on site. Corners are where seamless gutters leak, so the sealant matters: polyurethane stays flexible through a hundred summers, the cheap stuff cracks in three. A hip roof in Stone Oak with ten corners costs more per foot than a gable in Converse with four, and a quote that doesn't reflect that is guessing.

6-inch where it belongs

Six-inch gutter adds about $2–$3 a foot over five-inch. It's the right call on two-story houses, metal roofs, and any run that collects more than about 700 square feet of roof. Fascia

The item most likely to be missing from a low quote. If a corner of fascia is rotten, the gutter can't hang on it. A good estimate says so up front and prices the board per foot ($8–$20). A cheap estimate finds it on install day and either hangs the gutter on the rot or hands you a change order. We probe the fascia with a screwdriver before writing the number.

Adding it up

On a 200-foot two-story house that's the $800 gap. The cheap quote is, almost line for line, the gutter system the house already has, which is the system you're replacing because it sagged and overflowed.

What to ask on the phone

Gauge, hanger type and spacing, downspout size and count, whether 6-inch is quoted where the roof needs it, what sealant, whether fascia was checked, whether haul-away is included, and what the workmanship warranty covers.
